Portfolio Review III: Light and Form! : Drawing I

In this section, we've been focusing on rendering form.  We talked about "zones" of light on a form (highlight, light in middle tone, middle tone, shadow, shadow accent, cast shadow, and accent in cast shadow).  We continued to use cross-contour to help describe form.  We worked from "prepared grounds", where the drawing surface is prepared by rubbing charcoal dust into the paper to create a middle tone.  With this method, students worked both additively by "adding" marks to the paper with charcoal, or subtractively by removing charcoal with their erasers.  We also worked on gray and colored Canson paper using both black and white charcoal.  One assignment focused on "reflective" surfaces using white charcoal on black paper.

2nd Portfolio Review: Drawing I

This last month, Drawing I students have been working very hard studying positive and negative space,  contour and cross-contour lines, cross-hatching, line quality, line sensitivity, and value.  Working primarily in graphite, the focus is on line quality and composition.  Here are just a few examples of their work:

Portfolio Review 1: Drawing I and Drawing II: Keepin it in Perspective!

Drawing I and Drawing II started the semester studying perspective.  We took it slow and really focused on the basics... and got some pretty fantastic results!  We worked with gridded ground planes and focused on a true understanding of the meaning of the picture plane, eye level, station point, cone of vision, and scale.

3D Wire Projects

Here are some images of our first project in 3D Design at Thomas Nelson Community College. Students were asked to bring in a household item to use as a subject for a wire sculpture.  We started the project by investigating different ways of making joints with wire.  Students were asked to carefully consider positive and negative space and multiple viewpoints.  Another important consideration was to create contrast through areas of high density to areas of low density.
